Prevent Manager Burnout

Protect your leadership investment

Sadly, burnout is a very real issue and it can be too late by the time someone shows the typical signs. Manager burnout has ripple effects across the entire organisation – team performance and morale decline, communication breaks down and employee motivation and clarity suffer.

You know you’ve got problems if…

  • Cultures that drive staff to work excess hours and regularly take work home
  • Managers may resist taking holidays for fear of a mountainous workload on their return
  • You see symptoms like physical exhaustion at the end of the day, cynicism, irritability and detachment.
Time management and scheduling concept with calendar, checklist, and task planning for productivity, project management, deadline tracking, and efficient organisation of daily activities.

Why not try…

  • Having regular check-ins with managers where you ask TED questions (Tell me, Explain, Describe) about workload and stress
  • Developing a buddy system for managers to discuss challenges and solutions with others from different sections of the organisation
  • Encouraging regular holidays and time off to refresh and replenish
  • Health or wellbeing programmes that promote taking time to slow down

Make sure managers are equipped with the tools to do their job effectively. Many are self-taught, so give them:

  • Time management training that helps them use simple tools to plan and prioritise
  • Skills to delegate effectively so they’re able to move towards ‘letting go’
  • The ability to communicate their feelings, including the ability to assertively say no
